Why are stories so important to us?

Stories have always been a part of the human existence with the earliest stories being told around campfires and written on cave walls.

Even photographers, painters and dancers use their own art form(s) to tell the world a story.

The dictionary defines STORY as a factual or fictional account of an event or a series of events. This is a good definition yet, in my opinion, it is incomplete because...

1-A good story is entertaining.
A few of my favorite stories are Anne of Green Gables, The Chronicles of Narnia and The Lord of the Rings. Each one is filled with entertaining adventures and concludes with the main character(s) having overcome major obstacles, with the help of others.

2-A good story teaches valuable lessons. Aesop's Fables and Jesus' Parables are excellent examples of this.

3-A good story gives us history.
Christopher Columbus, the American Civil War and the first man on the moon are only three examples of countless historical stories for all of us to learn from.

As a child I loved listening to my mother and other relatives tell about our ancestors. My great, great grandfather was a missionary doctor to the Oregon Territory, My great grandfather started a lumber mill, a newspaper and built a barn - that is still standing today.

One favorite story is about when my mother and my aunt were children; their playhouse was the  wagon that my great, great grandfather had used to bring his family west. Another is my mother hiding under the weeping willow tree, eating green apples and ignoring her mother calling her. Needless to say, my mother had one very sore tummy for awhile.

I cherish these stories as they are my history. They tell me where I came from and help define the person I am today.

What is your favorite story? What stories do you have to share with your children and grandchildren?

What stories would you like to share with us and our readers?
