Is this not the way all good stories start?

Once upon a time, in real life, there was a man named Joseph Campbell (1904 - 1987). He spent most of his adult life exploring the myths and legends that have been passed on throughout history. What he discovered was all myths in every culture, throughout history, had the same underlying themes - and the same patterns. He taught and wrote extensively on these subjects.
Campbell also wrote extensively about the journey these heroes took. He divided the heroes' journey into three parts: Departure, Initiation and Return. Each part has many steps. It is a fascinating study.
The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars are both excellent examples of The Hero's Journey.
Later, a man by the name of Christopher Vogler wrote a book titled The Writer's Journey. In the book Vogler discusses the Hero's Journey and encourages writers to use those steps in all of their writings.
It obviously works. Vogler is the writer of some big name films, such as the Lion King.
